In the United States the ‘Main Street’ is generally a road or area where the retail and social parts of a place come together. A bit like the ‘High Street’ in the United Kingdom. So, I guess the name Main Street Burger Bar in Byron Bay is totally on point. The burger bar is indeed smack bang in the heart of Byron’s retail and social district. And just like a classic American burger joint you would find on the Main Street, it comes with booths, a shiny kitchen and plastic ketchup bottles, albeit with a relaxed Byron vibe and not a roller skate in sight.
Main Street Burger Bar is on Byron Bay’s Jonson Street – pretty much at the roundabout shared with Lawson Street. It opened in February last year and serves a lunch and dinner menu that includes some of the best burgers you will taste, as well as salads, sides and sweets and a drinks menu with real shakes and super sodas seven days a week. You can sit in the front part of the restaurant and watch the passing crowds or there are more tables at the rear of the restaurant, which does overlook the car park, but it is more quiet and more open.
There really is a burger for everyone on the menu at Main Street Burger Bar – including a jackfruit burger for the vegans. Sorry – but I can’t quite come at that one yet. There are kids sized burgers as well for the tin lids. But let’s get serious and start with the Main Street Beef Burger – a classic featuring an organic grass-fed beef pattie with double smoked bacon, caramelised onion, cheese, house made barbeque sauce, garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato. It’s served on a sesame bun and totally old school. You can’t go wrong. But if you like a bit of southern spice in your bun then you have to try the Chicken Burger with spiced buttermilk fried chicken that’s tender and crunchy, house slaw and smoked chipotle mayo. Make sure you add the jalapeños.
If you’re ‘shunning the bun’ as they say, I can wholly recommend the Harissa Smoked Lamb Shoulder Salad (this comes in a burger as well). The salads are generous and this one includes quinoa, roast pumpkin, slaw, beetroot, lettuce, tomato and hummus with a topping of delicious pulled harissa smoked lamb that has the perfect amount of heat.
On the side try the golden Fries with herb salt and garlic mayo and keep an eye on the specials board. If they are on the menu, try the Three Cheese Mac Croquettes with smoky tomato relish. The croquettes are cheesy and stringy and naughty. If you need something sweet to balance off your meal there are ice creams and sundaes to finish.
The drinks menu at Main Street Burger Bar is just as solid as the burger menu. There are fun sodas which feature some clever ingredients from local company Flavour Fountain. Try the Outback Passion. It reminds me of old school Pasito and features a fruity combination of passionfruit, bush orange, lemon myrtle and fresh lime with the option of a vodka shot! Then there are classic burger joint Shakes. You can add alcohol to these as well for a grown-up version like the Caramelised Banana Shake with Fireball cinnamon whisky. There are plenty of beers, ciders, wines and cocktails and a daily happy hour from 5pm – 7pm with $5 tap beers and wine. For non-alcoholic drinks, there are plenty of fridge selections including my favourite Bucha of Byron kombucha.
For classic burgers that deliver on taste, with a fun drinks menu and fast and friendly service try Main Street Burger Bar Byron Bay. You’ll find it on the Main Street (aka Jonson Street) in the heart of Byron Bay.
